Healthy Hair A Go Go
Hair comes in many forms… thick, thin, dry, soft, dark, light, long, and short. The pigmentation or colour of your hair is generally determined by the amount of melanin that is present in the follicle. The more melanin, the darker the hair. The less melanin, the lighter the hair. The hair follicle rests on average about 4.2 mm into the scalp, which means those suckers are anchored in there pretty well. However, lets not mistake the hair follicle for the hair itself.
The hair follicle consists of many different parts. It originates in the epidermis. Hair is a keratinous filament that continues to grow out of the epidermis. It is primarily made of dead cells. One hair follicle can actually contain up to 4 to 5 hairs. It is fairly typical to loose between 50 to 100 hairs per day. Some people shed even more. It the follicle itself is pulled out, it will generally regenerate.
Studies have shown that heat does have an impact on hair follicles. Heat can damage both hair and its follicle, but chemicals can actually destroy them or cause permanent damage. Using mild colouring or hair products, and reducing the amount of heat directed to the hair can significantly lower the changes of this damage.
Grey Hair
As we age, the pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die. The hair strand no longer contains as much melanin and will become more transparent in colour. This is what causes the grey, silver, and white colours in our hair as it lengthens. It is proven in studies that stress can cause the production of grey hair. The studies on occasion have also noted that when the stressful event concluded, the hair actually at times did revert back to dark. So CHILL the flip out peeps!!
It is also proven that genetics can play a major part as well. Gray hair is one of the universal signs of advanced aging. However, contrary to popular beliefs, if you do pluck out a grey hair, you will only receive a new one in its place. (Not five or ten new ones).
It is important to utilize quality hair product for the overall appearance, hygiene, and health of your hair. Cheap hair products are usually just detergents that remove the oil from your hair. More expensive products typically include other ingredients that nourish your hair and allow it to be manageable, feel great, and look good too.
Herbish
I literally was grey free up until a few months ago when I started to see a few strands poking their way through. Luckily, it was only a couple strands and I figured that I had made it this long, that overall I couldn’t complain. I did a bunch of research (as I always do), and came up with the most time and cost efficient plan. I found the best product that has been a perfect fix for me.
It is a shampoo and grey colour corrector all in one. I simply apply it to my dry hair like a shampoo, leave it on for 20-25 minutes while I take on another project around the house, and then rinse it off in the shower. I likely use this product once every six weeks. It comes with a small sample size of the matching conditioner treatment, however, I loved it so much that I ordered the full size for additional applications. I have very long hair and I have likely done three treatments to date with the same bottle.
Products
I also have two daughters with very long and thick hair. They both have their individual hair regimes that work for them. I have also asked them to put together a list of their recommended products. My son, (who also has a very full head of hair), tends to use most of my hair products and a few of his own. They will be listed below.
I am a firm believer in finding products that work for you. Also, there are so many products out there that are of high quality that allow you to easily and safely treat your hair right from home. I will list the ones that my girls and I have had success with. I have even gone as far as buying my own set of hair dressing scissors. ✂️ Use your own discretion…… Obviously!!!
